FACT-CHECK: Viral Open Letter Claiming Catholic Youth Association Stance on Politics is FAKE

CLAIM
A viral open letter circulated on X (formerly Twitter) by A. Ayofe (@abdullahayofe) on August 4, 2026, claims that the Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria (CYAN) issued a statement urging Catholic clergy to avoid partisan political comments ahead of the 2027 general election.
The post presented the letter as a reaction to comments attributed to Cardinal John Onaiyekan on Nigeria’s political situation.
The post had generated more than 255,000 views, 136 reposts, 406 quote posts, 375 likes and 87 bookmarks as of the time of this fact-check.

The statement suggests that the Catholic youth organization of Nigeria (CYON) have warned priests including Cardinal Onaiyekan against comment on public related.

VERIFICATION
DNN FactCheck examined the authenticity of the circulating open letter by reviewing the document’s organisational identity, branding, and response from the recognised Catholic youth body in Nigeria.
Findings showed that the viral document was issued under the name “Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria (CYAN)” and claimed to represent Catholic youths across Nigeria.
However, this name does not correspond with the recognised national Catholic youth organisation.
The recognised umbrella body for Catholic youths in Nigeria is the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), which operates under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
A key red flag in the document was the use of “Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria (CYAN)” instead of CYON. The difference in name, branding, logo and identity raised questions about the authenticity of the letter.
The Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), however in a disclaimer issued on August 4, 2026, distanced itself from the circulating document, describing it as false, fraudulent, unauthorised and an act of impersonation.
The disclaimer, signed by the National President, Gosife Kizito Eze; National Secretary, Francisca A. Adesokan; and National Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Maurice Mbeke, stated that the organisation did not author or approve the statement.
CYON also clarified that the purported “Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria (CYAN)” does not represent the recognised Catholic youth structure in Nigeria and urged members of the public to disregard the publication.
VERDICT: FALSE
WHAT WE FOUND
DNN FactCheck identified several inconsistencies in the viral letter.
First, the organisation name on the document does not match the recognised Catholic youth body in Nigeria. While the letter claims to have been issued by CYAN, the officially recognised organisation is CYON.
Second, the document’s branding elements, including its identity and presentation, were inconsistent with official communications from CYON.
Third, CYON publicly rejected the document and confirmed that it neither issued nor authorised the statement.
The viral post also misrepresented the context by presenting the document as an official response from Catholic youths to Cardinal John Onaiyekan, despite the recognised Catholic youth body denying involvement.
CONCLUSION
The viral open letter claiming that the Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria issued a statement urging Catholic leaders to avoid partisan political comments is false.
The recognised Catholic youth organisation in Nigeria, CYON, has denied issuing the letter and described it as fraudulent.
