FACT-CHECK: Viral Peter Obi Letter to Onitsha Monarch Is FALSE

CLAIM
A viral letter circulating on social media is being attributed to Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The purported letter was addressed to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, and raised concerns about political and financial matters in Anambra State.
The document, titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” purportedly discussed the conduct of Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, and issues surrounding the state’s financial records.
An X user, SISTALIANO (@Sistaliano), shared the purported letter on Saturday, September 19, 2026. As of the time of this report, the post had 708 comments, 402 reposts, over 1,000 views and 342 bookmarks.
Similarly, Facebook user Omoniyi Rector shared the document and claimed that Obi had written to the Obi of Onitsha over concerns about the conduct of Governor Soludo.
The purported letter included the statement:
“Your Majesty, Ndigbo have carried the hope of greater political relevance, economic prosperity, and responsible leadership for many years. That hope cannot be sustained by division.”
VERIFICATION
Peter Obi has denied authoring the letter.
In a disclaimer published on his official X account on September 19, 2026, Obi said his attention had been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media and purportedly written by him to the Obi of Onitsha concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State. His statement was subsequently reported by several Nigerian news organisations.
Obi described the document as false and fabricated and specifically stated that the signature attached to the purported letter was forged. He urged members of the public and the media to disregard the document.
The disclaimer directly contradicts the claim that the letter was written and signed by Obi.
Reports on the document also confirm that it was dated September 19, 2026, and carried the title “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak.” The letter purportedly addressed political disagreements and financial matters involving Anambra State, including issues connected to Obi’s tenure as governor and Soludo’s administration.
WHAT WE FOUND
DNN FactCheck reviewed the contents of the circulating document and Obi’s subsequent disclaimer.
The document was presented as an official communication from Obi to the Obi of Onitsha. It discussed political unity in the South-East and issues relating to Anambra State’s financial records.
However, Obi has expressly disowned the document and said he did not write it. He also identified the signature attached to the letter as “completely forged.”
The claim is therefore not supported by the person whose name appears as the author of the letter. Instead, the purported author has publicly rejected both the document and the signature attached to it.
The circulation of the letter also comes during the build-up to the 2027 general election, with Obi identified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. INEC’s final list published in September 2026 lists Obi Peter Gregory as the NDC presidential candidate and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
This political context makes it important to distinguish between an authentic statement from a presidential candidate and a document falsely attributed to him.
There is no evidence from the material reviewed that Obi authored or authorised the viral letter. His September 19 disclaimer provides direct evidence to the contrary.
CONCLUSION
The viral document titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak” was falsely attributed to Peter Obi.
Although the letter was presented online as a communication from Obi to the Obi of Onitsha concerning Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and financial matters in Anambra State, Obi has publicly denied writing it and said the signature attached to it was forged.
The evidence therefore establishes that the circulating document is not an authentic letter from Peter Obi.
VERDICT: FALSE
The claim that Peter Obi wrote the viral letter to the Obi of Onitsha concerning Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and Anambra State’s financial affairs is FALSE. Obi has disowned the document and confirmed that the signature attached to it was forged. The document is fabricated political content circulating during the 2027 election period.
